SSCS IS HOME TO: PRIME MINISTER’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING NOMINEE

We are pleased to announce that our own Kate Richer, Owls’ teacher, has been nominated for the prestigious, national Prime Minister’s Excellence in Teaching award. Candidates must meet qualifications in 5 extensive areas of teaching, including innovative and exemplary teaching practices, student skill development and student achievement and participation. Award winners will be chosen in 2012, and recipients will enjoy an all expenses paid trip to Ottawa to share best practices and be honoured by the Prime Minister.
Kate is in her seventh year of teaching at Salt Spring Centre School. During that time she has taught various grade levels ranging from 3 thru 6. She has developed and implemented the project based, service oriented, Leadership Program for students in the intermediate class. This program empowers students to make a difference in the world in which they live.
Kate is a great teacher and a worthy nominee but don’t take our word for it. Whole School Play – “Easy as Pi”

The play dates are May 25, 26 and 27th. Parts have already been handed out and everyone has either individual or group lines and we are practising weekly. Oona is also practising the music with the students.

Since we are adding the matinee, we will be canceling school for the next day – Monday May 28th. To make up for this missed day we will be adding 5 min to the end of every school day until the end of May.

Yearbook photos

Do you have candid photos of children from the school? We are gathering them together for the yearbook. Please bring photos on a memory stick. Ideally they are photos taken at school or school events but not necessarily. Thanks!

New positions for next year

For the 2012/13 school year, you will be seeing some changes in the adult faces around the school as some people move on and others come in to join us. While we are sad to see beloved staff and families leave us, we look forward to welcoming new people to our school community and to embracing change.

Two positions will be advertised in the paper next week: they are the gardening teacher and the French teacher. If you or anyone you know are interested please look for the posting and apply.

Summer Camps with Oona!

Girl Power Camp with Oona McOuat & Shelby Johnstone.  For girls ages 9-13

July 2-6, 10am-3pm     Salt Spring Island – A Magical South End Location    $195

Resilient, creative, adventuresome … come celebrate the power and possibility of being a girl. Through fun and innovative art, music, sharing, outdoor adventure, and a special full moon ceremony, girls will explore body image, media awareness, relationships, identity, and more, while building skills and self-esteem to shape their lives and the future of the world.

Woodlands Faerie Camp on Salt Spring with Oona McOuat & Shelby Johnstone. For girls ages 6-10, and 5 year olds entering kindergarten in September.

July 9-13, 10am-3pm      $185

Woodlands Faerie Camp on Mayne Island with Oona McOuat & Tina Farmilo. For girls and boys ages 5-10.

July 16-19, 10am-3pm     $125

In a beautiful woodland and meadow setting, children will explore their relationship with faeries, plants, nature, and the earth through art, story, magical play, ecology, and music.

Time to Register for Fall Soccer!

Saltspring United Soccer Club has now opened registration for the 2012 / 2013 Soccer Season. The season runs from Sept 2012 through to March 2013.

Players are strongly encouraged to complete online registration by April 30th. Players are eligible for early bird and / or family discount before April 30th, late registration fees will apply after April 30th. To get more information or to register please go to saltspringsoccer.com

Basic program details –

Mini & House Programs 4-8 year olds. $155-$180. Saturday mornings at Portlock. Players learn soccer skills through fun drills.

Travelling Teams 9 to 17 year olds.$290. 1-2 practices per week after school, weekend games. Half of games are on SSI, half on Vancouver Island.

New Players welcomed at all age levels!

Get to know your school’s board! The Ganges Educational Society (or GES for short) is the legal name for the Salt Spring Centre School, and has a board of directors consisting of five people at the moment.
They are:

Shauna Klem (Sisaye and Selamu’s mum) – Chairperson
Sean Norgard (Owen and Davin’s dad) – Treasurer
Willow Lampard – Secretary. Parent of two alumni students, Kai and Shael.
Sharada Filkow – former teacher and long-time school supporter.

Meetings are held once a month. If you have some thing to bring to the Board’s attention, please put it in writing and e-mail it to any one of us. We welcome questions and input from parents and staff alike.
